Jhumkhas are traditional earrings that are matched to Indian attire like Salwar Kameez or Sari. They dangle and are very elegant. You can wear simple ones on tunic tops too.
Well, last week I made a pair with polymer clay and they looked perfect. It is easy and doesn’t require lot of tools. You can use the very basic ones that are available at home and make amazing designs. For extra bling, some metallic acrylic paint works well.
So, here is tutorial:
Step 1: Make a small ball (aprox size of 2 garbanzo beans). Roll it well making sure it is nice and smooth. Depending on the polymer clay you use, there is a chance of it being soft. In such cases put it in the freezer for couple of minutes. Hardening it a little helps in cutting it easily without spoiling the round shape.
Step 2 : Use a sharp blade to make it half( keep rolling the blade on the ball and cut). If you want a bigger one, you can make 2 equal size balls and cut 1/4th and use the 3/4 piece.
Step 3: Using a pen, blade, tooth pick or match stick you can make designs on the clay ball.
Step 4 : For the stud part too, make a ball cut into half and make a design of your choice.
Step 5: Now time to add the basic jewelry findings. Take an eye pin and add to the bottom and stud part of the earrings. For stronger bonding, I use Poly paste – polymer clay glue.
Step 6: You can buy ear posts at your local craft store or @ Amazon/Ebay. Bake the pieces as per the package instruction and let them cool. Once cool add ear posts to the stud part with super glue and use jump rings to join. Or if you want a simple one, add a fish hook ear posts( as shown in pic).
For extra shine use an acrylic metallic paint. It can be done like show below:
Isn’t it easy and looks great too!!
You can make any kind of jewelry and any color that matches your outfit. And for the necklace you can use yarn, jewelry cord or satin ribbon and they look fab.
Hope you enjoyed the tutorial. If you happen to make any I would love to see 🙂
Have a great day!!
